Due to a prevalent gender gap and a reduced proportion of women in STEM degree, young girls are nowadays encouraged to take admissions into STEM programs. A STEM program encourages women to pursue their careers in STEM fields, thereby increasing the proportion of women in the same. With STEM job opportunities growing at a faster pace than non-STEM jobs, stereotypes that math is boring or that engineering is a “boy” thing are hurting our smart girls. Contrary to the widely accepted social bias that boys are more naturally capable of succeeding in math and science, research has shown that there is actually no difference in ability between both genders when it comes to math and science. However, girls are more prone to doubt their ability in STEM subjects, while boys believe they can learn and improve. Whether or not there's a STEM shortage now or will be one in the future, many governments seem to agree that STEM education is worth investing in. STEM forces students to approach education in an active and exploratory way. But the Department of Homeland Security mostly considers natural sciences (biology, chemistry), and formal sciences (mathematics, statistics) in their definition of STEM. Some social sciences like economics are instead grouped with arts and humanities.
