Don’t fall for the worksheet trap for math! Hands-on activities help kids internalize what they’re working on and are a lot more fun. Simple Rocket Science Using sticky notes, a marker and a whiteboard or large piece of paper taped to the wall, you can create a meaningful number-oriented game for your students. On the board or paper, draw groupings of dots, such as those found on the faces of a die, and scatter sticky notes with numerals on them throughout the classroom. The kids must then find the sticky notes and match the number to the amount of dots in each cluster. Rather than relying on memorization, this game helps students hunt for the numeric values of each digit that they encounter.

Ultimately all of these activities start with a problem or a goal that needs to be solved or met. Getting to the desired result requires problem solving and critical thinking skills. Older kids especially can experiment with completing a project through trial and error. Many STEM activities also require working together with more than one person. Learning how to collaborate effectively with your peers (even if at home that means siblings) is a life skill that is extremely useful. 17.
